Doing Business in Ghana as an Indian Entrepreneur: What to Know Before You Go

business-travel Aug 28, 2026

Ghana's gold, cocoa, and oil resources, combined with a strategic Gulf of Guinea location, have made it a genuine target for foreign investment — and its 2026 budget, following an IMF-backed fiscal stabilization program, signals a more deliberately business-friendly direction than in recent years.

The visa

Ghana's business visa covers meetings, conferences, trade exhibitions, market research, and contract negotiations — not paid employment, which requires a separate work visa process initiated by the Ghanaian employer. Ghana plans to launch a full electronic visa system, joining Kenya, Ethiopia, and Rwanda, which already run e-visa platforms — though as of this writing, the traditional application process remains standard.

The two-step registration most guides collapse into one

This is the detail that genuinely trips people up: registering your business isn't one step, it's two, and skipping the second one isn't optional if you have foreign participation.

  1. Register the legal entity itself at the Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) — the Registrar General's Department has automated much of this, making it reasonably efficient.
  2. Register separately with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) — under Section 24 of the GIPC Act, any business with foreign participation is legally required to register here, not just optionally encouraged to. This isn't the same registration as step one; it's a distinct, mandatory second filing.

The specific document that catches people off guard: a bank letter

If your equity investment is in cash, GIPC registration requires a "Bank of Ghana Equity Confirmation Letter" — official proof that your minimum foreign equity has actually been remitted, converted to Ghanaian cedis, and confirmed by your bank. You cannot complete GIPC registration without this specific letter, and it has to come through your own banking relationship, not be self-certified.

GIPC registration itself typically takes about 5 working days once documentation is complete and correct.

After registration

Only once GIPC registration is complete can foreign shareholders formally ship in capital goods — raw materials, machinery, equipment, vehicles — as part of their investment.

Note: GIPC fees and specific registration timelines can change without notice, per the Centre's own published fee schedule — confirm current fees directly before budgeting. This is orientation, not legal advice.
